DEVELOPER DOCUMENTATION / Microsoft

Microsoft Learn MCP Server

Connects to Microsoft's hosted Microsoft Learn MCP endpoint, which searches and fetches Microsoft documentation and code samples without an API key.

“No API keys, no logins, no sign-ups required.”

01 / THE REASONING

Why this made the selection.

  • The README lists exactly three tools, microsoft_docs_search, microsoft_docs_fetch and microsoft_code_sample_search, each reading Microsoft documentation; none writes to an account.
  • The README says the endpoint needs no API keys, logins or sign-ups, and gives configuration for VS Code, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, Windsurf and other clients.

02 / THE REVIEW RECORD

What we actually inspected.

Source review has boundaries.
A clear record is more useful than a “safe” badge.

Material inspected

  • README.md at f8ffde185dfd232dbf5d187c22ce299eadc3d583: endpoint, standard config, experimental features, tools table, client table
  • LICENSE at the same commit: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International
  • LICENSE-CODE at the same commit: MIT, Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation

Our findings

  • The public endpoint is documented without an API key.
  • The pinned repository documents the service; it does not freeze or independently verify the hosted implementation.
  • CC BY4.0 here refers to the documentation repository/content terms, not a licence assertion about the proprietary hosted runtime. The repository also carries LICENSE-CODE, the MIT License, Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation.
  • The README says the endpoint is for MCP clients over Streamable HTTP and may return 405 Method Not Allowed to a browser.
  • configExample is the README's "Standard config" block at this commit; install.command is the README's Codex row, with its quotes. The previous configExample omitted the servers wrapper and the previous command dropped the quotes.
  • The README does not state the hosted server's implementation language, so none is recorded. The @microsoft/learn-cli package in cli/ is a separate command-line client.
  • Health on 2026-10-13: repository not archived, default-branch HEAD was this commit, GitHub reports CC-BY-4.0.

Not established by this review

  • The hosted endpoint was not connected and no tool was called.
  • The experimental OpenAI-compatible endpoint and maxTokenBudget parameter were not exercised.
  • The CLI, plugins and skills in the repository were not installed.

The review applies to the material and revision named here. A newer upstream release can change its behavior.

03 / PUT IT TO WORK

Connect a server deliberately.

Upstream setup instructions ↗

DOCUMENTED COMMAND

codex mcp add "microsoft-learn" --url "https://learn.microsoft.com/api/mcp"

Copying does not execute this command. It may retrieve a newer version than the reviewed source.

  1. Add the HTTP URL https://learn.microsoft.com/api/mcp in the client, or use the README row for your client.
  2. Attribute Microsoft Learn when you republish text from it.

Before you start

  • A client that supports remote HTTP MCP

Documented configuration example

Use the client and authentication context described in the setup guidance. Configuration formats vary between hosts.
