DEVELOPER DOCUMENTATION / Amazon Web Services

AWS Documentation MCP Server

Fetches AWS’s own documentation so a service claim can be cited instead of paraphrased.

“This MCP server provides tools to access AWS documentation, search for content, and get recommendations.”

01 / THE REASONING

Why this made the selection.

  • The README is a local documentation reader: fetch a page as markdown, search, and ask for recommendations.
  • Search, section reads, table search, and recommendations are marked global only, while the service list and the aws-cn partition are the China path.

02 / THE REVIEW RECORD

What we actually inspected.

Source review has boundaries.
A clear record is more useful than a “safe” badge.

Material inspected

  • src/aws-documentation-mcp-server/README.md
  • LICENSE

Our findings

  • Launch args are a one-element list containing awslabs.aws-documentation-mcp-server@latest.
  • The server fetches AWS documentation pages and converts them to markdown, searches with the official search API, and can request recommendations.
  • Search, read_sections, search_table, and recommend are labeled global only. The available-services list is China only, and AWS_DOCUMENTATION_PARTITION must be set to aws-cn to query China documentation instead of global documentation.
  • The README does not document AWS credentials. It does document a network boundary: set MCP_USER_AGENT when a corporate proxy or firewall blocks the default User-Agent.

Not established by this review

  • No documentation query was executed.
  • The server was not started and its tools were not called.
  • A pin does not verify transitive dependencies.
  • No tools/list or tool call was made.

The review applies to the material and revision named here. A newer upstream release can change its behavior.

03 / PUT IT TO WORK

Connect a server deliberately.

DOCUMENTED COMMAND

uvx awslabs.aws-documentation-mcp-server@latest

Copying does not execute this command. It may retrieve a newer version than the reviewed source.

  1. Register the uvx command.
  2. Quote the returned page, including its date if the tool provides one.
  3. The one-line command above is the uvx launch in the README client block at this commit, not a separate installer. It was not run.

Before you start

  • uv
  • Python 3.10 or newer
  • Network access to the selected public documentation service

Documented configuration example

Use the client and authentication context described in the setup guidance. Configuration formats vary between hosts.
