SEMANTIC CODE TOOLS / Zilliz
Claude Context MCP
Indexes a local codebase into Milvus or Zilliz Cloud with a chosen embedding provider, then serves hybrid keyword and vector code search to an MCP client.
“Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration for Claude Context - A powerful MCP server that enables AI assistants and agents to index and search codebases using semantic search.”
01 / THE REASONING
Why this made the selection.
- Published in Zilliz's own repository; packages/mcp/package.json at this commit names @zilliz/claude-context-mcp version 0.1.15 with license MIT, matching the root LICENSE (MIT, Copyright (c) 2025 Zilliz).
- The package README documents four tools (index_codebase, search_code, clear_index, get_indexing_status) and four embedding providers (OpenAI, VoyageAI, Gemini, Ollama), so the embedding model is the user's choice.
02 / THE REVIEW RECORD
What we actually inspected.
Source review has boundaries.
A clear record is more useful than a “safe” badge.
Material inspected
- packages/mcp/README.md at 6fc318b4e3ce58e2898b00a9c3538ead9e24dee5
- packages/mcp/package.json at the same commit
- LICENSE at the same commit
Our findings
- Codebases are keyed by absolute path; a symlinked path or a second clone of the same repository creates a separate tracked entry.
- get_indexing_status reports phase-based progress, not a file-count ratio, and file and chunk statistics are written only when an indexing run finishes.
- search_code returns at most 50 results (default 10).
Not established by this review
- npx launch
- Indexing or searching any codebase
- Any embedding-provider or Milvus call
The review applies to the material and revision named here. A newer upstream release can change its behavior.
03 / PUT IT TO WORK
Connect a server deliberately.
DOCUMENTED COMMAND
claude mcp add claude-context -e OPENAI_API_KEY=your-openai-api-key -e MILVUS_ADDRESS=your-zilliz-cloud-public-endpoint -e MILVUS_TOKEN=your-zilliz-cloud-api-key -- npx @zilliz/claude-context-mcp@latest Copying does not execute this command. It may retrieve a newer version than the reviewed source.
- The command above is the README's Claude Code registration; replace the three placeholder values. It was not run.
- Choose EMBEDDING_PROVIDER (OpenAI, VoyageAI, Gemini or Ollama) and set its key or host, and point MILVUS_ADDRESS and MILVUS_TOKEN at a Milvus or Zilliz Cloud instance. Do not commit keys.
Before you start
- Node.js with npx
- An embedding provider key or a local Ollama
- A Milvus or Zilliz Cloud instance
Documented configuration example
Use the client and authentication context described in the setup guidance. Configuration formats vary between hosts.
