“Guides IA through releasing a new version of a GitHub library end-to-end. Handles SemVer versioning and Keep a Changelog formatting automatically.”

[GitHub community · upstream description ↗](https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/blob/3a685010a7afdc0dbd4c83b7fbda6c316aa516e5/skills/github-release/SKILL.md) Our analysis follows below.

01 / THE REASONING

## Why this made the selection.

 - Version analysis prefers the code diff as primary signal with commit messages secondary, and states the reconciliation rule outright: on conflict the diff wins, with worked examples.
- The first four of nine steps are read-only reconnaissance and nothing is written until the user confirms the proposed version, with a second confirmation on the changelog.

### A good fit for

 - Cutting a SemVer release with a Keep a Changelog entry
- Adjudicating whether a change set is major, minor or patch from evidence
- Prepare a release PR with a separate handoff for tagging its merge commit and publishing release notes.

### Weigh up before choosing

 - Single-package GitHub repositories are assumed; monorepos and non-SemVer tag schemes fall outside the versioning logic.
- Requires an authenticated gh CLI, git tags as version truth, and a clean tree; local-only tags and protected-branch pushes need manual handling per its error table.
- The initial reconnaissance is labelled read-only in the source although it includes checking out main, pulling origin/main and fetching tags; those commands can change local repository state.

02 / THE REVIEW RECORD

## What we actually inspected.

Source review has boundaries. A clear record is more useful than a “safe” badge.

### Material inspected

 - skills/github-release/SKILL.md
- skills/github-release/references/semver-rules.md
- LICENSE
- vercel-labs/skills@7407f3893ad4dceab546ac002c3ef806e4000c73:README.md

### Our findings

 - Tag discovery reads git tags directly with semantic sorting rather than trusting gh release list, with a documented reason for the choice.
- The diff excludes tests, docs, lockfiles and generated files by default and focuses reading on public-interface files.
- The PR step mandates body-file over inline body text because of PowerShell newline handling, with Bash and PowerShell variants throughout.
- The source calls steps 1–4 read-only, but step 1 includes git checkout and git pull; the final handoff leaves tagging and GitHub Release publication to the user.

### Not established by this review

 - No release was cut with this skill.
- Tag sorting, diff exclusions and PR creation were not executed.
- Not executed: it was not installed or run.

The review applies to the material and revision named here. A newer upstream release can change its behavior.

03 / PUT IT TO WORK

DOCUMENTED COMMAND

npx skills add github/awesome-copilot/skills/github-release --skill github-release Copy command ↗

Run in your terminal to choose your AI tools, project or global scope, and installation method. This short command follows the current upstream version; the review covers the revision shown above.

 Optional: install the reviewed revision

Keeps the original source and installer version where recorded, while leaving your AI tools and installation scope for you to choose.

npx skills add https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/3a685010a7afdc0dbd4c83b7fbda6c316aa516e5/skills/github-release --skill github-release Copy reviewed-revision command ↗ - Install the complete skill directory with its references; select your AI tools and project or global scope.
- Review the instructions before invoking them. The source revision shown here is the one reviewed; the installer was not executed or version-pinned by this review.

### Before you start

 - Node.js/npm and git for the documented Skills installer
- An agent host that supports the skill format and gh plus git commands
- An authenticated gh CLI inside the target GitHub repository

### Compatibility

Agent Skills-compatible coding agents · GitHub repositories with gh CLI and git available

### Git and GitHub release operations

 - Read tags, diffs and commit history
- Create release branches, push them and open pull requests once confirmed
- Branch creation and pushes are remote side effects gated on user confirmation

### Cost model

The skill is MIT-licensed; agent calls and any CI on the release branch remain separate.
