“Use for every request to commit changes or draft a commit message. Creates Sentry-style conventional commits with issue references.”

 [Functional Software, Inc. dba Sentry · upstream description ↗](https://github.com/getsentry/skills/blob/d18b7aa8ba878354e5c348310230e652f7690f9c/skills/commit/SKILL.md) Our analysis follows below.

01 / THE REASONING

## Why this made the selection.

 - The skill stops a commit that is still on main or master unless the user explicitly asked for that, and it asks for one reviewable change per commit.
- Footer keywords are not interchangeable: Fixes is defined as closing an issue on merge, and Refs is defined as a link that does not close it.

### A good fit for

 - Drafting a Sentry-style commit message for one local change.
- Keeping customer names, emails, ticket text, and secrets out of the message.
- Draft coherent commit messages that explain behavior and avoid sensitive customer context.
- Distinguish behavior-preserving refactoring, formatting-only changes, and repository metadata in commit types.

### Weigh up before choosing

 - It tells the agent to pass paragraphs as separate git commit -m arguments and not to open an editor. It does not push the commit or open a pull request.
- The subject rules are conventions, not a hook that rejects a message.
- This review did not execute the resource.
- Fixes footers can close issues on merge; references should not be guessed. This Sentry style may differ from the host repository convention.

02 / THE REVIEW RECORD

## What we actually inspected.

Source review has boundaries. A clear record is more useful than a “safe” badge.

### Material inspected

 - skills/commit/SKILL.md
- LICENSE
- README.md
- vercel-labs/skills@7407f3893ad4dceab546ac002c3ef806e4000c73:README.md

### Our findings

 - Before committing it checks the current branch and stops if that branch is still main or master after a feature branch was required.
- The message must not carry customer or organisation names, emails, support-ticket contents, secrets, or other personal data. The file gives no network call.
- Fixes and Refs are different footers. The skill does not push, and it does not turn a multi-purpose diff into one commit on purpose.
- The definition distinguishes Fixes from Refs, excludes PII from messages and checks the branch before committing.
- The message rules reserve ref for refactoring without behavior changes, style for formatting without logic changes, and meta for repository metadata; breaking changes use a BREAKING CHANGE footer.

### Not established by this review

 - The resource was not executed and its tools were not called.
- git commit was not run.
- Not executed: it was not installed or run.

The review applies to the material and revision named here. A newer upstream release can change its behavior.

03 / PUT IT TO WORK

## Add a skill to your workflow.

DOCUMENTED COMMAND

 npx skills add getsentry/skills/skills/commit --skill commit Copy command ↗

Run in your terminal to choose your AI tools, project or global scope, and installation method. This short command follows the current upstream version; the review covers the revision shown above.

 Optional: install the reviewed revision

Keeps the original source and installer version where recorded, while leaving your AI tools and installation scope for you to choose.

 npx skills@1.7.1 add https://github.com/getsentry/skills/tree/d18b7aa8ba878354e5c348310230e652f7690f9c/skills/commit --skill commit Copy reviewed-revision command ↗ - Install only the commit skill from the reviewed source directory with the explicit selector.
- Choose your AI tools and project or global scope. The reviewed source and installer version remain available in the optional command; this entry has source review, not an executed installation receipt.
- Inspect the target branch and intended changes before authorizing a local commit.
- For manual installation instead, download the complete bundle from https://undominated.ai/resources/skills/getsentry-commit/bundle.zip and extract it into a new directory. It holds SKILL.md unchanged at revision d18b7aa8, the upstream licence and an attribution file.
- Place the extracted directory in your host's documented skills directory, named commit. Keep SKILL.md and the licence together.

### Before you start

 - Node.js and npm
- A git checkout you are allowed to commit

### Compatibility

Agent Skills hosts · A git checkout

### Implementation

Markdown

### Prompt text that tells the agent to create a commit. It does not say to push.

 - Read the current branch name
- Create a feature branch when the checkout is on main or master
- Create one git commit
- Creates local Git commits when requested; branch changes and issue-closing effects follow repository permissions.

# Sentry Commit Messages

## Before Committing

```bash
git branch --show-current
```

If the branch is `main` or `master`, create a feature branch unless the user
explicitly requested a direct commit. Re-check the branch and stop if it is
still `main` or `master`.

Commit one coherent, independently reviewable change at a time.

## Message Rules

Use:

```text
<type>(<scope>): <subject>
<optional body>
<optional footer>
```

- Scope is optional. Add `!` before `:` for a breaking change.
- Write the subject in imperative, present tense; capitalize it, omit the
 trailing period, and keep it at 70 characters or fewer.
- Keep every line under 100 characters.
- Use the body only when useful. Explain what changed and why, including
 previous behavior or motivation when it helps.
- Never include customer or organization names, user emails, support ticket
 contents, secrets, or PII. Describe the technical symptom instead.

Allowed types: `feat`, `fix`, `ref`, `perf`, `docs`, `test`, `build`,
`ci`, `chore`, `style`, `meta`, `license`, and `revert`.

Use `ref` for refactoring without behavior changes, `style` for formatting
without logic changes, and `meta` for repository metadata.

## Footers

- `Fixes <issue>` closes an issue when merged.
- `Refs <issue>` links an issue without closing it.
- For breaking changes, add `BREAKING CHANGE: <impact>`.

## Creating the Commit

Use separate `-m` arguments for paragraphs and footers. Never put literal
`\n` sequences in a commit message or open an interactive editor.

```bash
git commit -m "fix(api): Handle null response in user endpoint" \
 -m "Return 404 when the user API finds a deleted account." \
 -m "Fixes SENTRY-5678"
```

The download contains SKILL.md . Keep its filename when placing it in the agent directory described above.

 other entities that control, are controlled by, or are under common
 control with that entity. For the purposes of this definition,
 "control" means (i) the power, direct or indirect, to cause the
 direction or management of such entity, whether by contract or
 otherwise, or (ii) ownership of fifty percent (50%) or more of the
 outstanding shares, or (iii) beneficial ownership of such entity.

 "Work" shall mean the work of authorship, whether in Source or
 Object form, made available under the License, as indicated by a
 copyright notice that is included in or attached to the work

 "Derivative Works" shall mean any work, whether in Source or Object
 form, that is based on (or derived from) the Work and for which the
 editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications

 separable from, or merely link (or bind by name) to the interfaces of,
 the Work and Derivative Works thereof.

 "Contribution" shall mean any work of authorship, including
 the original version of the Work and any modifications or additions
 to that Work or Derivative Works thereof, that is intentionally
 submitted to the Licensor for inclusion in the Work by the copyright owner
 or by an individual or Legal Entity authorized to submit on behalf of
 the copyright owner. For the purposes of this definition, "submitted"

 Work and such Derivative Works in Source or Object form.

 3. Grant of Patent License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
 this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
 worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
 (except as stated in this section) patent license to make, have made,
 use, offer to sell, sell, import, and otherwise transfer the Work,
 where such license applies only to those patent claims licensable
 by such Contributor that are necessarily infringed by their
 Contribution(s) alone or by combination of their Contribution(s)
 with the Work to which such Contribution(s) was submitted. If You
 institute patent litigation against any entity (including a
 cross-claim or counterclaim in a lawsuit) alleging that the Work
 or a Contribution incorporated within the Work constitutes direct
 or contributory patent infringement, then any patent licenses
 granted to You under this License for that Work shall terminate
 as of the date such litigation is filed.

 4. Redistribution. You may reproduce and distribute copies of the
 Work or Derivative Works thereof in any medium, with or without
 modifications, and in Source or Object form, provided that You
 meet the following conditions:

 (a) You must give any other recipients of the Work or
 Derivative Works a copy of this License; and

 (b) You must cause any modified files to carry prominent notices
 stating that You changed the files; and

 (c) You must retain, in the Source form of any Derivative Works
 that You distribute, all copyright, patent, trademark, and
 attribution notices from the Source form of the Work,
 excluding those notices that do not pertain to any part of
 the Derivative Works; and

 (d) If the Work includes a "NOTICE" text file as part of its
 distribution, then any Derivative Works that You distribute must
 include a readable copy of the attribution notices contained
 within such NOTICE file, excluding those notices that do not
 pertain to any part of the Derivative Works, in at least one
 of the following places: within a NOTICE text file distributed
 as part of the Derivative Works; within the Source form or
 documentation, if provided along with the Derivative Works; or,
 within a display generated by the Derivative Works, if and
 wherever such third-party notices normally appear. The contents
 of the NOTICE file are for informational purposes only and
 do not modify the License. You may add Your own attribution
 notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside
 or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided
 that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed
 as modifying the License.

 You may add Your own copyright statement to Your modifications and
 may provide additional or different license terms and conditions
 for use, reproduction, or distribution of Your modifications, or
 for any such Derivative Works as a whole, provided Your use,
 reproduction, and distribution of the Work otherwise complies with
 the conditions stated in this License.

 5. Submission of Contributions. Unless You explicitly state otherwise,
 any Contribution intentionally submitted for inclusion in the Work
 by You to the Licensor shall be under the terms and conditions of
 this License, without any additional terms or conditions.
 Notwithstanding the above, nothing herein shall supersede or modify
 the terms of any separate license agreement you may have executed
 with Licensor regarding such Contributions.

 6. Trademarks. This License does not grant permission to use the trade
 names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor,
 except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the
 origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file.

 7. Disclaimer of Warranty. Unless required by applicable law or
 agreed to in writing, Licensor provides the Work (and each
 Contributor provides its Contributions) on an "AS IS" BASIS,
 WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or
 implied, including, without limitation, any warranties or conditions
 of TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, or FITNESS FOR A
 PARTICULAR PURPOSE. You are solely responsible for determining the
 appropriateness of using or redistributing the Work and assume any
 risks associated with Your exercise of permissions under this License.

 8. Limitation of Liability. In no event and under no legal theory,
 whether in tort (including negligence), contract, or otherwise,
 unless required by applicable law (such as deliberate and grossly
 negligent acts) or agreed to in writing, shall any Contributor be
 liable to You for damages, including any direct, indirect, special,
 incidental, or consequential damages of any character arising as a
 result of this License or out of the use or inability to use the
 Work (including but not limited to damages for loss of goodwill,
 work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all
 other commercial damages or losses), even if such Contributor
 has been advised of the possibility of such damages.

 9. Accepting Warranty or Additional Liability. While redistributing
 the Work or Derivative Works thereof, You may choose to offer,
 and charge a fee for, acceptance of support, warranty, indemnity,
 or other liability obligations and/or rights consistent with this
 License. However, in accepting such obligations, You may act only
 on Your own behalf and on Your sole responsibility, not on behalf
 of any other Contributor, and only if You agree to indemnify,
 defend, and hold each Contributor harmless for any liability
 incurred by, or claims asserted against, such Contributor by reason
 of your accepting any such warranty or additional liability.
